Sorry

Sorry it has been so long but I do have an update.

I met with a nutritionist last week to discuss what I should and should not be eating. Based on the lab tests she says I need to stop eating so much protein and actually eat more carbs in my diet, even though those are what raise my bg level. She said I have been doing extremely well keeping my bg in control though which is a good thing. She recommended around 200-250 carbs per day, big change from the maybe 50-100 I am eating right now.

And I also wanted to rant about when I was home last, and how much I really miss it. I got to have lunch and dinner with Julie and I really miss that, even though it was just at the break room in M&T Bank. Sometimes I wish I would have stayed at the bank and not gone to school... but supposidly this is better for my future =/.

Home...

I've been here for about 2 to 2 1/2 months now and I can say one thing for sure, I miss home.

I thought I would never call Lancaster my home but now I seem to miss it more than others.

Along with my mother, I miss my friends. Especially Julie who made me laugh and enjoy going to work every day. It still seems like a big piece of me is missing... =/ It is really tough now that there is a strong possibility I will be working in Chestertown and/or Dover for the summer meaning I won't be able to 1. Live in Lancaster or 2. Visit as much as I would like to.

DIabetes Eh???

So I know most of you know what diabetes is in general, but this post gets a little bit more in depth on what it really is.  There are mainly two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2.

Most people know of what type 2 is and most of the people diagnosed are type 2.  Type 2 is when people become "insulin resistant."  With this your body still produces insulin to break down glucose properly but it doesn't use it in the most proficient way.  About 90-95% of people diagnosed are type 2.

Type 1 is when the bodys immune system attacks the beta cells that produce insulin.  This is also known as "insulin dependant."  This is because the body will need outside insulin injected into itself so it can survive.  Without it, a type 1 will die.

The original dick doctor I went to diagnosed me with type 1 but I am currently not on insulin and the normal doctor I go to now is withholding diagnosis pending more tests.

In a normal person whos body uses and produces insulin properly their blood glucose level rarely goes over 140mg.  And this is the measurement two hours after they eat, about the time when the levels will be the highest.  When I was diagnosed I was fasting for 10 hours and ran a blood sugar level of 256mg, almost twice what people have two hours after they eat.  Another fact to know is that when your blood is over 140mg nerve damage starts to happen.

What that means now is that I have to eat an extremely low carb and low sugar diet to help protect my body.  I also have to exercise at least 30 min, five days a week to help my body use insulin efficently.  Again I will provide a more indepth view of what I have to do every day, just not at this time.

Hopefully now you have a better explination on whats going on with my life and what I deal with every day.

Just Another Day

I know this seems kind of like everyones life but it just seems like I wake up and don't really do anything productive with my life.  Even when I was working fulltime I still felt empty on the inside.   Now I have to wake up every day knowing I have to prick my finger at least 4x daily just to see if I am healthy.  Man that sucks.

But despite all of this I have come to realize how important family and friends are.  Even though I may only have a few friends and am really close to some family, it fells really good seeing them and even better when I get to spend time with them.

Anyways here is a picture of my beautiful dog.  Some people want to know what it is like living with diabetes and I will probably post a daily breakdown at some point.  Man I really miss just living the way I used to.

The Beginning

Well this is the first post of this. I decided to make this because I thought it would be interesting to try blogging for awhile. Basically for those who don't know me I am a 22 year old student currently attending Washington College. It is located in Chestertown, MD and I am studying computer science.

I was also recently diagnosed with having diabetes. Even though I will now live forever with this disease I refuse to let it control me. I hope to give some people a glimpse of what it might be like living with this and to share my experiences with others in the regular and diabetic community.
